Video streaming giant YouTube announced Tuesday that it has suspended One America News Network (OANN) and demonetized their account which prohibits them from making money off of their existing content.
YouTube Spokeswoman Ivy Choi confirmed the actions Tuesday in a statement:
Early on in this pandemic, we’ve worked to prevent the spread of harmful misinformation associated with COVID-19 on YouTube. After careful review, we removed a video from OANN and issued a strike on the channel for violating our COVID-19 misinformation policy, which prohibits content claiming there’s a guaranteed cure.
..
Additionally, due to repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy and other channel monetization policies, we’ve suspended the channel from the YouTube Partner Program and as a result, its monetization on YouTube
It is not clear what video or alleged “cure” OANN aired that caused the issue, but the “strike” is the first step to removing the network from YouTube.
If OANN wishes to regain monetization rights, the network will have to re-apply to the YouTube Partner program – a move that likely to see quick rejection as YouTube does not consider OANN to be an “authoritative news source.”
