Watch: White House Press Briefing with Jen Psaki – 1/25/21 [video and notes]

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki held a briefing Monday.

Comments on Immigration

When asked about the ending of Trump’s ‘remain in Mexico’ Psaki avoided answering at first then redirected the reporter to DHS for an answer.

On Russia

The president has no scheduled calls with Russian President Putin over the anti-government protests and treatment of Alexei Navalny.

The Biden administration is conducting a review of Russia’s actions and our relationship.

On Coronavirus Stimulus

Democrats are increasingly calling for use of reconciliation (the nuclear option) so that compromise (aka Unity) with Republicans is no longer necessary in order to get the $1.9 trillion Coronavirus + progressive agenda bill passed.

On Coronavirus Vaccines

Psaki blamed the Trump administration for CDC’s inability to communicate how much vaccine is available. Later in the briefing, Psaki said that only about 50% of the available vaccine has been used. Without knowing how much there is, how do they know what percentage has been utilized?

The Biden administration is not sure when they will be able to tell the public how much vaccine is available.

While the Trump administration said that full availability of the vaccine would take until mid-year, the Biden administration is unsure when that will happen.

New Travel Requirement

All persons (U.S. citizens included) flying from other nations to the U.S. will be required to have a negative COVID-19 test before they will be allowed to fly.

China

The Biden administration is conducting a review of our relationship with China and will continue to do so.

Biden is committed to ending China’s abuses of its own people (Uyghurs?) and U.S. companies (industrial espionage).

Whether Biden will keep restrictions against Huawei or not is under review.

Last week Biden issued an EO canceling Trump’s EO that kept China out of the American power grid. Psaki had no answer as to why and said she would follow up.

The administration is unsure when they will have a comprehensive China plan ready to publicize.

Riots in Washington, Oregon

They are monitoring the situation and do not think that “breaking windows is not protesting.”

U.K. Trade

Psaki had nothing to communicate on a free trade deal with the United Kingdom.

Harriet Tubman on $20 Bill

Treasury is looking into making progress on putting Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill. The proposal came from the Obama administration who couldn’t make it happen then stalled during the Trump administration.
