North Carolina released new mask guidance Thursday for K-12 schools that will have students breathing a little easier.
The guidance does not eliminate masking for school children, but instead, leaves it to local authorities to decide whether or not to force children to wear masks.
“Consider moving to voluntary masking at the discretion of local authorities,” the state said in its K12 StrongSchoolsNC Toolkit. “Universal masking is a less important tool in lower risk settings like schools.”
Despite scientific evidence and multiple studies showing that masking school children provides no measurable benefit and child health advocates’ concern that masking harms early development, North Carolina’s new position still pushes the idea that masks are protective.
“Because masks can add a layer of protection for those who want it, schools should support students and staff who choose to wear a mask.”
North Carolina is the latest Democrat-run state to pull back from overzealous COVID mandates as polls show increasing voter displeasure with the measures and the 2022 midterm elections near.
