Russia is in full retreat in the North of Ukraine and completely stalled out in the south and east.
Last week, Russia announced that it was halting offensive maneuvers in the north saying that they had achieved their objectives there. In truth, a month-long assault on the north had resulted in massive losses for Putin’s military.
Russia’s army isn’t organized or trained to operate on a theater-wide scale with multiple ongoing offensives. Poor communication, near non-existent logistics, ill-maintained equipment, and dependence on large numbers of untrained conscripts and riot cops all led to what can only be called a failure.
Initially, Russia had claimed that the war was necessary to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. Now, Putin appears content to keep his conquests in the east and south from just southeast of Kharkiv through Luhansk and Donetsk and around to Crimea. The current Russian lines appear to be defending what Putin apparently hopes to keep by joining the Donbas region to Crimea. It’s not clear that he’ll be able to defend even this.
As Russia retreats, its military leaves behind mass graves full of murdered civilians – the ones they bothered to bury at all. Some were left bound and blindfolded in the middle of the street with gunshots to the head.
