TikTok Is Owned By China and Giving the CCP Your Personal Data

TikTok is one of the most popular video-sharing apps used around the world by people of all ages and has more than 800 million users. TikTok is owned by 39-year-old Chinese billionaire Zhang Yiming. Yiming’s company is a Beijing-based technology company called ByteDance and had a net worth of $59.4billion in 2019. Musical.ly, a Chinese social media app merged with ByteDance in 2019 and then merged with TikTok. Currently, TikTok’s net worth is estimated at $75 billion.

Yiming is China’s second richest man. He has explicitly said it would deepen his cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party. That should be a concern for everyone around the world clarifying TikTok is a security threat.

China is using TikTok to spy on you and accumulate information about you and your children. Your kids are unknowingly helping them.  Meanwhile, lawsuits have been filed and TikTok, paid a $5.7 million fine to the FTC to settle allegations that it violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by letting children under 13 sign up for its platform without their parent’s consent. In May 2020, 20 advocacy groups alleged that TikTok is still violating COPPA.

Warnings cautioning users about TikTok appear to be in vain. Research has shown that TikTok is a serious privacy threat and that the company shares data it collects with the Chinese Communist Party.  Although most social media sights have similar data collection policies, typically they don’t share it with the Chinese Communist Party the way TikTok does. So how much data does TikTok collect and share? They have your IP address, browsing history, financial information, date of birth, location data – including GPS coordinates, your IMEI number which is your device’s fingerprint, uploads, videos you watch, and so on.
