UK Prime Minister Resigns After Agenda Derailed

United Kingdom’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has announced that she will resign after less than 2 months in office making her the shortest-serving PM in UK history.

“I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party,” Truss said in a statement Thursday. “I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”

Truss’ resignation comes just over 3 months after the resignation of former PM Boris Johnson signifying a tremendous split in the UK’s Conservative Party. Truss was elected with the support of only 1/3rd support from conservative MPs.

Massive unfunded tax cuts in the “mini-budget” sent UK markets into a tailspin. The ensuing fear was all that was needed to completely derail her entire agenda.

Labour and other parties are using the conservative upheaval and twice-failed prime ministers to push for a new general election.

“After 12 years of Tory failure, the British people deserve so much better than this revolving door of chaos,” Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer said. “The Tories cannot respond to their latest shambles by yet again simply clicking their fingers and shuffling the people at the top without the consent of the British people.
