Former Trump Press Secretary Becomes State’s First Female Governor

Republican Arkansas gubernatorial candidate Sarah Huckabee Sanders won her race against Democratic nominee Chris Jones, according to multiple election forecasters.

The former White House press secretary under former President Donald Trump had won 71.6%, while Jones won 26.9% with 4% reporting, according to the AP. Sanders is the first female governor of Arkansas, and her father, Mike Huckabee, previously served as Arkansas governor from 1996 to 2007.

The state’s current executive, Republican Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, is leaving office due to term limits. Trump had previously encouraged Sanders to run for governor in the state.

“Arkansans will be safer and more prosperous with your conservative leadership,” Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton wrote after the race was called.

Sanders raised a historic $5 million for her campaign, with most of it coming from out-of-state donors in the first few months of 2022, according to the AP.
