Lisa Murkowski Says She Has Considered Caucusing With Dems

Republican Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski toyed with the idea of caucusing with Democrats on Monday, saying it would be based on if it benefits her constituents.

The senator first hinted at the scenario during the “GD Politics” podcast with Galen Druke, calling it an “interesting hypothetical.” Murkowski was asked if she would caucus with Democrats if the Senate becomes 50-50 after the 2026 midterm elections, to which she expressed that she would be driven for “what’s best for Alaskans.”

“People know what motivates me, and it’s this love for Alaska and what I can do. So that’s my primary goal. I have to figure out how I can be most effective for the people that I serve,” she told Druke.

While the Alaskan senator pointed out the challenges that exist on the Republican side, she also acknowledged that she doesn’t “see the Democrats being much better.” Murkowski further argued the Democrats have policies that she strongly disagrees with.

However, when asked by Druke on whether she would caucus with Democrats as part of a coalition government to pass bills, Murkowski responded that “there’s some openness to exploring something different than the status quo.”

Murkowski’s office did not respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The Alaskan Senator was one of seven republicans who voted to convict President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial and has constantly been a critic of the president’s foreign policy, particularly on Ukraine. She also recently expressed doubts to the Daily Caller News Foundation that Senate Republicans will ultimately agree to follow through on the cuts in Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.”

Murkowski also voted to back 12 of Biden’s nominees and voted with him 64% of the time in 2023, according to ABC News. Most recently, she joined three other GOP senators in opposing the Senate’s proposal to a full-scale repeal of the Biden-era energy tax credits and cautioned against it.
