It is a widely accepted opinion that the radical left wing of the Democratic Party is manipulating the government shutdown. This does not mean that you will see them at the podium dictating terms to end the shutdown, but it does mean that the left wing is terrorizing the pillars of the Party and forcing them to act on behalf of the radicals rather than their constituents. The relationship that most people are watching, and trying to use as a barometer for when this record-breaking shutdown will end, is between Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Representative Sandy Cortez (D-NY). Schumer is traumatized at the thought of Cortez primarying him in 2026 and running to replace Schumer in the Senate. Though Cortez is downplaying this possible scenario, everything she is doing indicates this is her play in the next year. Along with her octogenarian partner, Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Cortez has been crisscrossing the country on this Oligarchy rally tour, which is obviously a campaign for the New York Senate seat on a national level.
Schumer and, to an extent, Jeffries are abandoning ties with moderate or centrist Democrats and ensuring they stay in good graces with far-left progressives. The far left, in the meantime, has moved even further to the left, if that is even possible, and is embracing the Democratic Socialist candidates, who both have excellent chances of winning their respective races on Tuesday. Zohran Mamdani in New York and Omar Fateh in Minneapolis are leading and projected to win their mayoral races. Should this play out, the far left will be further emboldened to exert its will over the established Democrats in both Houses. This outcome will make it even more difficult for Chuck Schumer to end the shutdown without significant concessions from the Republicans. This is the subliminal power that the Democratic Radicals are wielding, and their leaders are powerless to oppose it.
The Democratic Socialists (DS) are a force to be reckoned with. They are only running in two races this year, but these were the test balloons for the movement, and both are looking successful. The DS has a headquarters and a growing number of followers in every state in the country, and is poised to make far more noise in 2026. This is what the Squad has been working towards since Obama was in the White House, and polls show mounting support from all demographic groups within the Democratic base. Far be it for history books to prove that Socialism has never worked anywhere on the globe, these zealots believe it is time and that this Socialist movement is different and better than any in the past. These people who feel that our current systems have locked them out of the American dream are ready to accept a free ride at the expense of the rich, whom they despise.
It is sad and astonishing to see free bus rides and daycare overshadow the damage that these Socialist candidates can exert on their cities. They have no master plan and are both well over their heads in governing. As much as they have tried to hide or downplay their connections to radical anti-American groups, the truth is coming out, but either too late to make a difference, or their supporters accept these relationships as part of the package. Either way, the future is dark for Minneapolis and New York City, and this darkness may be coming to a city near you in 2026. And these two wins could mean the shutdown continuing into the holiday season.
