Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan is resigning effective immediately, the Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs confirmed in a statement released Wednesday.
Officials in the Department of War took to social media to announce that Phelan has stepped down from his position. The department expressed appreciation for his service to both the Navy and the broader defense establishment.
“Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan is departing the administration, effective immediately. On behalf of the Secretary of War and Deputy Secretary of War, we are grateful to Secretary Phelan for his service to the Department and the United States Navy,” Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell wrote. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.”
Parnell said that Undersecretary Hung Cao will now serve as the Acting Secretary of the Navy.
