My Sister, My Daughter, My Senator

On Monday afternoon, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced that Darline Graham would fill the remaining months of her brother Lindsey’s unexpired Senate term. Only a couple of days after we learned of the sudden death of Lindsay Graham, on Saturday, a very brave Darline stepped up to the podium, accepted the role, and offered some words of tribute to her friend, brother, and guardian. It was fitting for McMaster to appoint Darline, as it was for President Trump to suggest the decision on Truth Social. Lindsey was surely smiling down on his younger sister as she agreed to fill his shoes for the next few months, though Lindsey Graham’s shoes are far too big to fill.

We always hear accolades at the time of someone’s passing, but in the case of Lindsey Graham, there may not be enough accolades to celebrate the life and accomplishments of a man who may be the last of his kind. Lindsey Graham was a statesman and leader respected on both sides of the aisle and around the globe. Graham never took a passive role and always took the extra step needed to reach the goal. Lindsay passed just hours after coming home from Ukraine, where many said the groundwork was laid to end the war between Russia and Ukraine that has gone on far too long. It was said that Lindsey joked on the trip that he could not die now, because he had too much work to do. He was dead just hours later.

A few themes recurred as the people who knew and loved Lindsey told stories about their relationship. His sense of humor may be paramount, and I love the line about Jesus coming for him before 10 am and him not being ready to go. It spoke to his humor and faith, both off the charts. There was also his love of family, especially his little sister. They were both very young when they lost their parents just a year apart. Lindsey picked up the mantle and not only looked after Darline, but adopted her and became her legal guardian. Lindsey was only 20 at the time, but this was indicative of the type of person he was. He saw a challenge and jumped in to help solve it.

Like most, I did not always agree with Graham’s policies, but admired his steadfast resilience to be true to his beliefs. He was a fierce debater, but always with humor and respect. His on-again, off-again relationship with Donald Trump speaks volumes about the forgiveness and loyalty they both had. They could disagree, get angry, but always get back together to fight the bigger battles.

I spoke of this in my last article, but Lindsey Graham is one of the last of a unique breed of men and women who loved their country, understood its past, and were willing to do what it took to keep her on track. They also loved the American people and devoted their lives to molding a country that was better for everyone’s lives. Lindsey was a gentleman, but could be a lion, too. He showed that side during the Kavanaugh hearings when he blasted the Democrats for trying to destroy a man’s life for the sake of their quest for power. He called them his friends as he chastised them in a way we rarely saw. Many say it was this show of courage and rage that saved Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Bench and protected him as a man.

They broke the mold when God created Lindsey Graham, and we can only hope that he might inspire some young man to emulate him and be the kind of statesman and leader this country craves. Rest in peace, Lindsey Graham, and may God keep his loving arms around you in His kingdom.

The sudden loss of a figure like Lindsay Graham—especially so soon after his final mission—lands hard. Your words carry both the steel of a statesman’s record and the tenderness of a brother’s lifelong guardianship of Darline. That balance of strength and sensitivity is exactly what this moment needs, and I will meet it the same way.
