The Sudanese government rebuked a ceasefire drafted by the U.S. aimed at ending the African country’s civil war that has been raging since April 2023.
U.S. Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos proposed a 90-day ceasefire which became a point of contention during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in September. Boulos’ ceasefire proposal aimed to pave the way for negotiations toward a formal end to the African nation’s war and a transition to civilian rule.
Sudanese military advisor, Amjad Farid told Reuters from the UN General Assembly, “Mr Boulos seems to be putting pressure on us to accept a de facto partitioning of the country similar to the Libyan model … our concern is that the approach Mr Boulos continues to advance appears to accommodate the militia’s continued existence and preserve a place for it in Sudan’s political future.”
Boulos is an appointee of President Donald Trump and the father-in-law of the president’s daughter Tiffany.
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to the State Department’s press team, but did not immediately receive a response.
The Sudanese Civil War is an ongoing power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and rebel militia, Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The SAF controls much of the north and east, while the RSF controls much of the south and west.
Sudan rejected the proposal because the US ignored the government’s demand for an international community monitored RSF withdrawal from urban areas, Reuters reported.
The African country is a crucial strategic stronghold for critical minerals and precious metals. The area is lucrative for the mining of gold, chromium, copper, and rare earth minerals including uranium.
