Democrats Name Probe Targets and Post Investigator Jobs, but DOJ Says It’s ‘Not Afraid’

Democrats are wasting no time turning their new majorities into investigations, and the Trump administration is already signaling it will not go quietly.

Hours after the midterm blowout, incoming Democratic committee leaders named targets including Jared Kushner, former Homeland Security official Corey Lewandowski and Attorney General Todd Blanche, the New York Post reported.

A primary focus is expected to be the Trump family’s crypto venture, World Liberty Financial, along with Trump’s memecoin sales and Trump Organization property deals, according to the Post, which cited New York Times reporting.

The hiring has already started. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee posted three jobs less than 24 hours after the election, including “counsel, anti-corruption” and “investigators and oversight counsel,” the Washington Examiner reported.

Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, in line to chair that panel, said Democrats “must use every tool at our disposal to rein in this President, end this illegal war in Iran, and reverse his tariffs,” according to the Examiner.

Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the incoming Judiciary Committee chairman, called “the political and financial corruption driving the Trump presidency” a “civic emergency,” the Post reported.

Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the top Democrat on Homeland Security, said Democrats will investigate “the administration weaponizing DHS against Americans” and “its blatantly corrupt self-dealing,” he told the Post.

Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden, expected to chair the Finance Committee, offered a one-word preview: “Subpoenas,” The Straits Times reported.

The Administration Fires Back

“DOJ officials are not afraid of threats from Democrats on the Hill: we have followed the law and will continue to do so,” a Justice Department spokesperson told the Post.

The spokesperson added that “rather than focus on bringing down costs for Americans, Democrats in Congress are picking up where their weaponization efforts left off when they were last in power,” according to the Post.

A White House official went further.

“If crazed Democrats want to abuse their power and politicize the process of investigations, subpoenas, and destroying lives, they should be reminded that we still control the federal government and all of its powers,” the official told the Post.

Trump brushed off talk of a third impeachment. “I think it would destroy the Democrat Party if they did that — impeachment for no reason. What, for having a successful country?” he told reporters Wednesday.

Not every Democrat wants probes first. “Should we investigate? Yes,” incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on MS NOW. “But number one, get those costs down.”

Republican lawyers are preparing too. Former Trump defense attorney James Trusty said GOP attorneys see “a growth industry for a couple of years,” The Straits Times reported.
