Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., easily won a fifth term Tuesday despite an ongoing federal criminal investigation that includes questions about her immigration paperwork.
The Associated Press called the race for Omar. With more than 95% of the vote counted, she had 76.5% to 16.2% for Republican John Nagel, according to results published early Wednesday.
Independent DeVelle Jackson drew about 7%, NBC News results show. Nagel is a former Minnesota State Patrol officer, MPR News reported.
Omar has represented the Minneapolis-based 5th District, one of the most Democratic in the country, since 2018, Fox News Digital reported. She was one of the first two Muslim women elected to the House.
Agents with Homeland Security Investigations searched Omar’s Washington home on Oct. 12 and took her phone, passport and computer, Fox News Digital reported. Investigators also obtained her DNA.
Fox News Digital reported the probe is examining whether Omar or her father lied on immigration paperwork when she applied for citizenship. A separate inquiry is examining her financial disclosures.
Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, voluntarily spoke with federal investigators in the days after the search, Fox News Digital reported.
Court filings from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington referred to her as “Ilhan Omar Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Omar.” She married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen, in 2009.
The filings revived longstanding allegations that Elmi is Omar’s brother. A federal inquiry into the matter opened in 2016 under former President Barack Obama and closed in 2021, a source told Fox News Digital.
Omar has not been charged with a crime and denies wrongdoing. “Trump has an unhealthy and creepy obsession with me,” she told The Nation this week.
After the search, Omar returned to Minnesota to cast her ballot and met with members of the Somali community at a Minneapolis mall, according to Fox.
Her spokeswoman, Jackie Rogers, has called the marriage allegation a “baseless, disgusting conspiracy theory” and “a desperate political smear designed to distract from Trump’s failed presidency.”
Omar asked supporters for donations to help pay for the legal fight she is likely to face. The week before the election, she campaigned in Minneapolis with left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, Fox reported.
Elsewhere in Minnesota, Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar was elected governor, defeating Republican state House Speaker Lisa Demuth in a race shaped by a state fraud scandal, the AP reported.
Klobuchar replaces Gov. Tim Walz, who dropped his bid for a third term as the fraud investigation grew. She pledged to audit state government and said she was “not going to be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump.”
Omar returns to a House that Democrats are set to control, part of a sweep that ended Republican dominance in Washington, according to the AP.
