‘Lawyer Up’: Democrats Warn Trump Team of Subpoenas After Midterm Sweep

Democrats wasted no time after their midterm sweep, putting President Donald Trump’s administration on notice that subpoenas and investigations are coming once they take power in January.

“LAWYER UP,” Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, posted on X, Fox News reported. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., posted a single word: “Subpoenas.”

Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., named the officials she wants before Congress. “Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what’s up? Clear your schedule,” she wrote on social media.

Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts joined in. “They are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing,” he wrote on X.

Investigations Already Mapped Out

Garcia, in line to chair Oversight, has said his panel would move fast on the Trump family’s business dealings, immigration enforcement, alleged corporate corruption and the Epstein files. “We’re not starting from scratch here,” he told Punchbowl News, Fox reported.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth could face the toughest scrutiny. Democrats had already filed impeachment articles accusing him of waging an unauthorized war against Iran and obstructing congressional oversight.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said last month that “one of the first things” a Democratic majority would do was “run Pete Hegseth out of town.” Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., plans to force a lame-duck impeachment vote.

House rules let committees hand subpoena power to their chairs, so incoming Democratic chairmen could demand testimony and documents without Republican support. Defying a subpoena can lead to contempt proceedings and court fights.

Former Trump advisers Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro were both convicted of contempt of Congress for defying Jan. 6 committee subpoenas and served four months in prison.

Not every reaction was from lawmakers. Progressive streamer Hasan Piker, who campaigned with Michigan Senate winner Abdul El-Sayed, posted “WE’RE GONNA PUT YOUR ASS IN JAIL,” Fox News reported.

Some on the right blamed Trump. Massie said Republicans had betrayed promises to put “Americans First,” avoid “another war” and “prosecute sex traffickers.” Commentator Matt Walsh called the Iran war “the greatest political blunder in the last two decades.”

Democrats have spent months mapping out investigations and sending document requests that could be followed by subpoenas once they control committees, according to Fox News. Senate Democrats could open probes of their own.

Other progressives celebrated the Texas results. “TEXAS IS BLUE. THIS IS HISTORY,” commentator Dean Withers wrote, Fox reported, after the Fox News Decision Desk projected wins for Democrats James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa.

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was blunt. “We gave President Trump our support, we gave him our money, we gave him our vote,” she wrote, “and he didn’t deliver.”

The new Congress convenes in January. Until then, Republicans keep their gavels, and the administration has a few weeks to prepare for oversight fights it largely avoided over the past two years.
