Progressive Democrats are already promising prison time for immigration officers as the party prepares to take committee gavels, shifting the post-election message from grocery prices to targeting ICE.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan looked ahead to imprisoning ICE agents for enforcing federal immigration law, Twitchy reported, in comments circulating widely on X after Tuesday’s blue wave.
Fox Business host David Asman summarized the pitch this way: “Democrats are about to take the gavels, and the first thing they’re promising their base is prison for ICE agents. Not lower rent, not cheaper groceries, not safer streets. Prison,” according to Twitchy.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington told a Washington State Democrats crowd she expects to chair the House Immigration Subcommittee, Twitchy reported.
Jayapal said “every single one of these corrupt people that kidnapped, and detained, and deported, and k*lled people in the streets” will “come before us,” and that “we are going to send them to prison,” according to Twitchy.
Critics noted that neither Tlaib nor Jayapal has the unilateral power to imprison federal officers for carrying out statutes Congress itself wrote, Twitchy noted in reaction posts.
The threats land as Democrats insist they won on affordability. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Wednesday the caucus is “relentlessly focused on affordability and on accountability,” the Washington Examiner reported.
Other Democrats are naming immigration enforcers as probe targets. Illinois Rep. Delia Ramirez listed “Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino” and told them to “Clear your schedule,” the Daily Caller reported.
X conversation about Tlaib, Jayapal and ICE prison threats surged into the hundreds of posts per hour Thursday morning after a quieter overnight lull, matching the clip’s spread on conservative accounts.
Republicans argue the rhetoric exposes the real priority once Democrats hold subpoena power: punishing border enforcement rather than cutting prices that voters said drove their ballots.
Congress can investigate, hold hearings and refer cases to prosecutors, but criminal charges remain a Justice Department decision. The progressive threats nonetheless preview the oversight fight coming in January.
President Donald Trump’s White House has already signaled it will resist what it calls abusive Democratic investigations while Republicans still control the executive branch for two more years.
Tlaib’s comments did not address citizens killed by illegal aliens, focusing instead on federal officers enforcing immigration statutes while under attack from left-wing protesters, Twitchy argued.
The contrast with Jeffries’ affordability line is already a conservative talking point: Democrats ran on prices, then led with ICE prosecutions and subpoena threats once the gavels were in sight, Twitchy highlighted.
Immigration remains one of the few issues where Republicans still held an edge in recent exit polling, even as Democrats flipped Congress on cost-of-living anger — making the prison-for-ICE message a high-risk tell for 2028.
