Just when the Houston Texans appear to have finally solved their long-lasting quarterback problems, a killer injury ended the season of their best defensive player.
All world defensive lineman J.J. Watt who finally appeared to be healthy went down with what has been reported as a tibial plateau fracture in his left leg early in the first quarter. A deathly silence fell over the crowd at Reliant Stadium as Watt was carted off the field and taken away in an ambulance.
It was a critical loss as the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs were able to score at will in running up 42 points for their fifth consecutive win.
The Titans dropped to 2-3 but have reason to be hopeful despite the loss of Watt.
Rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson continued to light it up with his second consecutive game where he accounted for five touchdowns. In the last two games, Houston has scored an astounding 91 points thanks to the former Clemson star’s uncanny ability to adapt to the NFL.
Watson’s performance is great news for the Texans who suffered through the miserable tenure of Brock Osweiler last year despite having a championship caliber defense – without Watt who also missed the majority of the year with a back injury.
Even with Watt, beating the Chiefs – who are hitting on all cylinders – would have been a tough rock to roll but the schedule is about to get a lot better for the Texans.
The toughest game is a road game at Seattle in late October and then things line up very nicely for a team that already benefits from playing in the worst division in the NFL.
Barring any more catastrophic injuries, this could be a very dangerous team come playoff time and may well exact their revenge against Kansas City should the Chiefs falter.
