WATCH: ‘Transparent Aluminum’ technology from Star Trek is a real thing

Sheet of ALON – Transparent Aluminum

In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the crew travels back to 20th century Earth and needs to build an aquarium onboard their ship. Scotty delivered the formula for a future technology called transparent aluminum to a manufacturer in trade for the materials they need to finish their mission.

21st-century scientists have now made a high-strength, lightweight, optically-clear material called ALON and, you guessed it, it’s basically transparent aluminum.

ALON – Transparent Aluminum – is a ceramic composed of Aluminium, Oxygen and Nitrogen.

Watch as youtube channel Wonder World demonstrates this amazing material and its exciting possible applications.
