Heritage Foundation Launches New Tool To Help Americans ‘Rediscover’ Nation’s History

The Heritage Foundation on Monday unveiled a new online resource that rates how historically accurate historic sites across the nation are, the Daily Caller News Foundation first learned.
The conservative think tank’s webpage, titled “The Heritage Guide to Historic Sites,” highlights significant battlefields, presidential homes, museums and a variety of other historic sites. Heritage Foundation’s map also ranks the “historical accuracy” of different historical sites in the U.S. based on an A, B, or C rating.
“The next 250 years of our Republic depend on whether we can rekindle a true understanding of what it means to be an American—the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship,” Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts told the DCNF in an exclusive statement. “That’s why the new Heritage Guide to Historic Sites is so essential. It equips American families with the tools they need to enjoy the sites that mark some of the greatest episodes in our nation’s history, without the Left’s anti-American and ahistoric narratives.”
Brenda Hafera, assistant director and research fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s B. Kenneth Simon Center for American Studies, told the DCNF in a statement that the guide is intended to help Americans “rediscover the American story together.”
“The Heritage Guide to Historic Sites provides Americans with a supplemental and reliable resource to enrich their visits to battlefields, museums, and presidential homes,” Hafera said. “Our hope is that family members, classmates, and fellow citizens will celebrate America 250 this summer by visiting the places where history really happened, equipped with the Guide, and rediscover the American story together.”
“While all the sites on the map are historically significant, not all of them are depicting the American story fairly and honestly,” she continued. “No one is an expert in every aspect of American history, and people go to historic sites to learn. The background of evaluators who contributed to the Heritage Guide to Historic Sites match the sites themselves, so they are able to identify historical inaccuracies that are not always obvious.”
The guide ranks George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate with an A rating, citing its “consistently balanced tone” and “adherence to scholarly standards.”
The release of the Heritage Foundation’s new website comes ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. President Donald Trump unveiled an executive order in January which established a White House task force to support the planning of a celebration of America’s 250th.
