Wealthy New Yorkers Preparing To Flee For Florida As Socialist Zohran Mamdani Leads Polls

New Yorkers are preparing to flee for Palm Beach, Florida, as Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani seems poised to win and raise taxes on the rich, Fox News reported on Monday.
Mamdani, a Democratic socialist running on a platform of taxing wealthy New Yorkers, garnered the support of 43.8% of likely voters polled — about ten points ahead of independent candidate and former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, according to a Suffolk University poll released on Monday. Miami-based Fox News reporter Danamarie McNicholl said on “America Reports” that Palm Beach realtors assert “there’s a new sense of urgency for wealthy New York buyers.”
“These are families, empty nesters, looking to buy a home like this and gain residency. So some New Yorkers are taking a closer look at Florida’s no-state income tax, especially as a potential tax hike looms,” McNicholl said. “Raising taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers has been one of Mamdani’s key campaign promises. Luxury real estate agent Johnny DelPrete says this is a main concern.”
Fox News then aired a clip of DelPrete speaking to McNicholl.
“High-net-worth people, you know, they’re paying those taxes. So they really want to know what are they getting for what they’re paying,” DelPrete said. “There definitely has been more traffic, more flow through here in regards to showings.”
After the clip, McNicholl said local officials are also observing the phenomenon.
“The mayor of Boca Raton says the Mamdani effect is real. And he’s been fielding calls from worried New Yorkers,” she said. “In June, the city launched a newyorktoboca.com, which has seen thousands of views, also igniting a billboard in Times Square.”
Republican Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer said in a clip Fox News aired that in addition to high taxes, New Yorkers also have concerns about a potential increase in crime under Mamdani.
Mamdani plans to increase taxes on the top 1% of earners in New York City by an additional 2%, targeting those making over $1 million per year, to fund his platform of rent freezes, free buses and city-owned grocery stores. He has also claimed during his campaign that billionaires should not exist.
Moreover, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis quipped in June that a Mamdani win could lead to an exodus from New York City.
“If this socialist mayor candidate wins – you’re gonna see real estate value skyrocket even more in Palm Beach, because people are gonna get out of that city,” DeSantis said during a bill-signing ceremony for legislation covering public beaches. “As bad as [Bill] DeBlasio was, this guy is like going to be way, way, worse.”
