I Cannot Believe I Agree with James Carville
And hell has frozen over. Never in my adult life did I ever see myself agreeing with James Carville. Carville is an octogenarian political consultant, author, and television pundit who has strategized for Democratic candidates for decades. He is the poster child for liberal progressive thinking, and I have never encountered a topic we agreed upon until today. Carville calls the DSA and their philosophies a bridge too far. I take it a step further and call them what they are: treasonous anarchists working to tear this country down from within.
They are not simply “progressives.” They are open socialists and Marxists who have figured out the most efficient path to power in America: infiltrate the Democratic Party, win primaries in deep-blue districts where a Republican has no chance, and then use the Democratic brand as camouflage while they push to dismantle the constitutional order. The Presidency reduced to a figurehead. The Senate abolished or neutered. The Supreme Court packed into irrelevance. That is not hyperbole. That is the logical endpoint of their own platform and rhetoric.
Carville and I are not alone. Bill Maher, Van Jones, Senator John Fetterman, and Representative Henry Cuellar have all drawn the same line. There are now more than 35 DSA-backed candidates who have already won their primaries. Many defeated sitting Democratic incumbents. Most are running in districts so blue that the general election is a formality. Think of the damage the original Squad inflicted with only four or five members. Now multiply that by seven or eight. That is the scale of the problem heading into November.
The greatest accelerant of this movement is not their ideas. It is the cultivated ignorance of their followers. I use the word “ignorant” deliberately and without insult. These young people were not educated. They were indoctrinated. Our schools and universities spent decades teaching them that America was founded on stolen land and built by slaves for the exclusive benefit of the rich, while carefully omitting the mountains of corpses produced by every serious attempt at socialism and communism in the last century. They never learned about the Holodomor, the Cultural Revolution, the Cambodian killing fields, or the slow-motion collapse of Venezuela. They heard only the promises: free healthcare, free college, free housing, and the end of “greed.” When you graduate with a liberal-arts degree, six figures of debt, and no marketable skills, those promises sound like salvation. The DSA is simply harvesting the crop that the education system planted.
And no one has been more effective at harvesting that crop than Hasan Piker, better known as HasanAbi. This self-proclaimed Marxist now commands roughly three million Twitch followers and millions more across other platforms. He is not a fringe crank. He is the most influential radical left voice of his generation, and the mainstream media has decided to treat him as a legitimate political commentator rather than the anti-American agitator he is. Piker does not merely cheer for the DSA. He actively organizes for them. He fundraises on stream, mobilizes phone banks, and turns online rage into real-world political action. He has become the primary recruitment pipeline turning frustrated, poorly educated young people into reliable foot soldiers for the socialist project. When a man with that kind of reach is given a respectful platform by the same media that still treats conservatives as existential threats, the danger multiplies.
The DSA despises capitalism, yes. But more than that, they despise the actual American founding. They have absorbed the academic narrative that this country is irredeemably oppressive and that its institutions must be burned down and rebuilt according to their vision. They now have Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez amplifying their message. They have Piker converting that message into a daily stream of content for a generation that gets its politics from livestreams instead of history books. And they have a growing bloc of candidates who will soon be sitting in Congress with the power to obstruct, radicalize, and eventually transform the Democratic Party from the inside.
This movement must be stopped early. Republicans must fight it because it threatens the country. Serious Democrats must fight it because it threatens to destroy their own party. Carville is primarily worried about the second problem. The rest of us should be worried about both. The DSA is not a passing progressive fad. It is a radical ideological project that has already captured the mayoralty of America’s largest city and is on the verge of embedding a significant congressional faction. If we wait until they have the numbers to force their agenda, it will be too late.
The hour is later than most people think.
