DOJ Charges 63 People in 15 States With Voting Crimes on Eve of Midterms
The Justice Department charged 63 people across 15 states with election crimes on Monday, the day before the midterm elections.
The charges include illegal voting, fraudulent voter registration and false claims of U.S. citizenship, the Washington Examiner reported, citing a DOJ press release. Four of those charged are illegal immigrants. The immigration status of the others was not immediately clear, meaning some may be in the country legally but ineligible to vote.
Monday’s cases bring the number of people charged with voting fraud-related offenses since President Donald Trump returned to office to 239. The department said it has charged 195 noncitizens in 25 states with illegal voting and registration offenses in the past nine weeks alone.
“These foreign nationals allegedly took advantage of the trust of the American people and flouted the laws that govern our nation’s elections,” Attorney General Todd Blanche said. “This Department of Justice will continue investigating and prosecuting voter fraud to restore confidence in our electoral system.”
Some Registered as Far Back as 2000
The defendants are from Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Texas, Tennessee, New Jersey, Wisconsin, New York, Utah, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, California, Arkansas and Pennsylvania.
Prosecutors allege some registered to vote as far back as 2000 while knowing they were not citizens. Others allegedly registered and cast a ballot on the same day despite being ineligible.
Supreme Court Turns Away California Ballot Fight
The charges came the same day the Supreme Court declined, with no noted dissents, to take up DOJ’s emergency request involving more than 20,000 California voters the administration flagged as suspected noncitizens. The department had wanted their ballots set aside until citizenship could be verified.
California officials say the federal list is riddled with errors and would disenfranchise eligible citizens.
The administration has made rooting out noncitizens on voter rolls a centerpiece of its election-integrity push.
The Associated Press reported that the administration’s own record of arrests and charges reflects what research and state investigations have long found: noncitizen voting is extremely rare.
