New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) pledged to sue if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade during a speech on Wednesday.
Cuomo said, “We now need to codify Roe v. Wade, which will actually increase the protections in New York, God forbid they do what they intend to do, which is overturn Roe v. Wade. I want to get it done before the Supreme Court does that. Because I don’t want any gap in a woman’s right to protection and we have a better legal case when the Supreme Court acts. Because I will sue when the Supreme Court acts, and I want the New York State law in place.”
Cuomo has been very vocal in recent months calling on his fellow lawmakers to increase protections in New York.
“We never passed the New York State law because we relied on Roe v. Wade and everyone assumed it would always be there,” said Cuomo.
Fox’s Brit Hume took to Twitter to question Cuomo on his pledge to sue if Roe V. Wade was overturned.
Hume tweeted: “Did he really say that? Whom would he sue, and where would he find a court able to overrule the Supreme Court?”
