Fani Willis Says Someone Registered Her to Vote as a Republican at Trump Tower
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis says someone fraudulently registered to vote in her name in New York, listing her as a Republican living in Trump Tower.
Willis told WSB-TV investigative reporter Mark Winne she learned of it when the New York City Board of Elections notified her that it was canceling a registration in her name as suspected fraud.
“It came to my attention that someone registered to vote as me in New York. Interestingly enough, they registered me as a Republican that lived in Trump Tower, of all places,” Willis said.
She said she did not fill out or sign the application, which carried a false date of birth, the wrong party and a forged signature. Willis says she is a lifelong Democrat.
The form listed Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue as her home and the Fulton County Courthouse as her mailing address. Winne came across the documents while interviewing Willis on an unrelated case.
The board told Willis it has no record of any vote cast under the registration. Anyone who tried to vote with it would have had to show identification or other proof of residence, the board said.
Willis believes the filing was meant to harass her. “I’ve been threatened and harassed,” she said. Asked whether someone committed a crime to harass her, she answered, “Absolutely.”
Her office is in contact with a New York prosecutor about whether to pursue criminal charges. No charges had been announced as of Sunday.
What New York Law Says
Under New York Election Law Section 17-104, registering or trying to register under another person’s name, or knowingly giving a false residence, is a felony.
The state’s registration form warns that anyone who signs it falsely can be convicted, fined up to $5,000 and jailed for up to four years.
Willis remains a polarizing figure. In August 2023 she indicted Trump and 18 allies on racketeering charges over efforts to overturn his 2020 loss in Georgia.
She was disqualified in December 2024 over a romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor she had hired. Peter Skandalakis took over and moved to drop the case, and a judge dismissed it in November 2025.
Georgia Republicans have kept up scrutiny of her office. A state Senate special committee formed in January 2024 investigated her handling of the Trump prosecution.
In May, Gov. Brian Kemp signed a law making district attorney races and other local contests nonpartisan in five metro Atlanta counties, including Fulton, starting in 2028, the AP reported. DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston has challenged it in court.
Willis said she wants no confusion about her eligibility to vote in Georgia and is relieved that no ballot was cast in her name.
