Harris Tells Democrats to Be ‘Ruthless,’ but Bill Clinton Urges an ‘Open Hand’
Kamala Harris wants Democrats to show no mercy with their new majorities, telling the party to be “ruthless” in going after the Trump administration.
Democrats elected across the country “must be ruthless in using every lever of power to deliver economic relief for working families and hold this administration accountable for their deep-seated corruption,” Harris wrote on X, Fox News reported.
“They are done with the corruption, incompetence, and callousness coming from the White House and the capitulation of Republican leaders,” the former vice president wrote of voters, according to Fox News.
Harris, the party’s 2024 presidential nominee, made the case in a post on X after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, according to Fox News.
Hillary Clinton went further. “Crimes against our people and our Constitution must be answered for,” the 2016 Democratic nominee wrote Wednesday, Fox News reported. “The post-Trump era begins now.”
“The historic abuses of the last two years must be prevented from happening again,” Hillary Clinton added, according to Fox News, while also warning that Democrats will squander the win if they don’t stay focused on delivering for voters.
Bill Clinton Strikes a Softer Note
Former President Bill Clinton offered a far gentler message. Democrats should act “with humility and determination, and an open hand, not a clenched fist, to those who didn’t vote for our candidates,” he said, Fox News reported.
“Last night’s victory gives us an opportunity and a responsibility to rebuild trust,” the former president said, according to Fox News.
He also listed ending “senseless wars and tariffs,” protecting health care and “getting our national debt under control” among the party’s jobs, according to Fox News.
Harris’s call fits what incoming committee leaders are already planning. Incoming committee leaders have named targets including Jared Kushner, former Homeland Security official Corey Lewandowski and Attorney General Todd Blanche, the New York Post reported.
Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden, expected to chair the Finance Committee, summed up the plan in one word: “Subpoenas,” The Straits Times reported.
Not every Democrat wants to lead with probes. “Should we investigate? Yes,” incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, the Post reported. “But number one, get those costs down.”
Republicans are bracing. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, now running for minority leader, warned that Democrats “will weaponize every single gavel,” the Daily Caller reported.
The White House has signaled it will fight back. “We still control the federal government and all of its powers,” a White House official told the Post, warning “crazed Democrats” against abusing investigations.
President Donald Trump has dismissed impeachment talk. “I think it would destroy the Democrat Party if they did that — impeachment for no reason,” he said, the Post reported.
The White House and the Republican National Committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the Harris and Clinton statements, according to Fox News.
