Keisha Lance Bottoms Flips Georgia Governor’s Mansion Despite Jackson’s $200 Million
Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected governor of Georgia on Tuesday, flipping the top job in a key swing state and defeating billionaire Republican Rick Jackson despite his enormous spending advantage.
The Associated Press declared Bottoms the winner, calling the race at 9:24 p.m. ET, according to the Washington Examiner. Fox News Decision Desk also projected Bottoms would win.
The former Atlanta mayor becomes the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history and the first Democrat to win a Georgia governor’s race since 1998.
Jackson, a healthcare executive running for office for the first time, put more than $200 million of his own money into the race, AP reported. In the Republican primary runoff, he beat Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, whom Trump had endorsed. Trump later campaigned with Jackson.
“Tonight, the voters spoke … and I respect their decision,” Jackson told supporters.
Biden Aide to Governor
After serving as Atlanta’s mayor from 2018 to 2022, Bottoms worked in former President Joe Biden’s White House as a senior adviser. She campaigned on expanding Medicaid, raising the minimum wage and raising pay for public employees, Fox News reported. Jackson pitched phasing out Georgia’s income tax.
Bottoms held a rally with former President Barack Obama in the closing days of the race. A RealClearPolitics average of September and October polls had shown Jackson ahead by 1.2 points, according to the Washington Examiner.
She will succeed Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who could not run again because of term limits. Georgia Democrats also reelected Sen. Jon Ossoff on Tuesday, AP said.
