NPR CEO Still Wants You To Believe Her Network Isn’t Completely Biased

National Public Radio (NPR) CEO Katherine Maher tried to convince the public on Thursday that her network has no political slant at all.

Maher denied any bias on “CNN News Central” despite her network having a long history of publishing politically slanted headlines that favored the political left and refusing to correct false narratives. Her remarks preceded the Senate’s passage of President Donald Trump’s rescissions package on Thursday that slashes $9 billion in previously appropriated funding to a public broadcasting nonprofit that financially supports NPR and PBS, as well as foreign aid.

“When it comes to the accusation of bias, I would start, as I always start out by saying, that we of course are a non-partisan organization and we want to serve and are required to serve the entirety of the American public,” Maher said.

WATCH:

Maher has notably made accusatory and harsh comments toward Trump, including in 2018 when she called him a “racist.” She also wrote on X in 2020 that Trump is a “deranged racist sociopath” and had claimed in a separate post that the U.S. is “addicted to white supremacy.”

In 2020, NPR refused to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story ahead of the 2020 election, writing that they did not want to “waste the listeners and readers time on stories that are just pure distractions.” In November 2018, the network falsely reported that Donald Trump Jr. lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his September 2017 testimony about plans for a Trump Tower in Moscow, which actually referred to an entirely different project.

Maher’s network also attempted to discredit the COVID-19 “lab leak theory” by citing “scientists” and “virus researchers” who supposedly “debunk[ed]” the possibility that the virus originated in a lab in Wuhan, China. NPR also stopped airing Trump’s coronavirus task force briefings in the Seattle, Washington, area in March 2020.

NPR also previously reported that country music and birds are “racist,” promoted the now-debunked allegation that Trump’s 2016 campaign colluded with Russia, and that there is no evidence that men have a biological advantage over women in sports, Republican Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy previously laid out on the Senate floor.

Uri Berliner, a former editor at NPR, wrote in The Free Press in April 2024 that NPR tried to take Trump down by pushing Russiagate. He also alleged that the network was in agreement about prioritizing race and identity, which led to a lack of “viewpoint diversity.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday that both NPR and PBS are “propaganda voices” for the left in response to Daily Caller White House correspondent Reagan Reese’s question on Maher claiming that cutting funding to NPR is a “risk” to “public safety.”
