The American Jury System Has Been Corrupted Beyond Repair
I can speak from personal experience on this topic because I have been there and done that. I served on a Massachusetts Superior Court jury for a month and was selected for four separate trials. The cases were very different, but the jury room experience was all too similar. The room was filled with people seeking power, compromise, and a quick resolution with little concern for the truth and evidence.
Jury members should be anonymous from the start of the trial until the judge strikes the final gavel. At no time should serving on a jury result in danger to your life or your family’s. That is not the case in the Lindsay Clancy trial in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
You would think that the verdict in the Clancy trial for the murder of her three young children would be a slam dunk. After all, Lindsay Clancy admitted she killed her children by suffocating them with exercise straps. The trial afforded her the chance to pin the blame for her actions elsewhere. In this bizarre world we live in, sympathy grew by the day for the wheelchair bound killer mother. She is in a wheelchair because of damage done to her legs and spine in a suicide attempt. The death of her children blurred the lines, and signs for freedom for Lindsay took up the cause outside the courtroom. This is another example of how far we have drifted off the path.
The jury showed their hand quickly, with notes to the judge indicating they would have a difficult time reaching a unanimous verdict. The judge had to force this jury back into deliberation twice, the legally mandated number, before actually declaring a mistrial when the jury declared a hung jury, an absolutely horrific end to this nationally followed case.
Once the judge released the jury, the finger-pointing and analysis of the jury’s performance began, and emotions ran high. The jury’s final vote was 11 Not Guilty and 1 Guilty. That lone vote resulted in the mistrial and decision. The media went wild with the news, and when it was disclosed that the lone juror was black, it nearly caused rioting on the streets; instead, it resulted in an all-out assault on this lone juror. The juror’s race was disclosed live to Gayle King on CBS. King said she would need a minute to digest that new info. What did the juror’s race have to do with the process unless you are a member of the media that lives on relating everything to color? The juror was doxed, as were the identities of his family members. This juror is no longer safe, and we have seen what happens to a person of interest when fanatical zealots take things into their own hands. There was talk by the jurors and media that this verdict was to make a statement about the killing, postpartum depression, excessive medication, and mental state. This should never be the case. The jury’s job is to ascertain the evidence and testimony and determine guilt or innocence-period. Nothing in today’s world is ever cut and dry, and common sense is never a consideration.
