Garcia Warns Trump Family to ‘Lawyer Up’ as Oversight Democrats Prep Subpoenas

Incoming House Oversight Chairman Robert Garcia doubled down Friday, releasing a video that ends with “LAWYER UP” across the screen and warning President Donald Trump’s family and allies that Democratic subpoenas are coming in January.

“Oversight Democrats are ready to take on the crooks, the con men and the Trump crime family. Lawyer up,” the California Democrat wrote on X, according to CNBC.

“The American people have spoken, and they are tired of the unprecedented level of corruption coming out of this White House and under President Trump,” Garcia said in the video. “Oversight Democrats are absolutely going to ensure that we investigate every single one of these instances. Now let’s get to work.”

Democrats’ midterm sweep hands them House control when the new Congress convenes Jan. 3. That shift gives Garcia’s panel the power to compel documents and testimony after two years in the minority.

Garcia, currently the committee’s ranking member, said targets include alleged corruption around Trump family businesses, cryptocurrency ventures and Pentagon contracts, plus what he calls abuses by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and people tied to Jeffrey Epstein.

Miller Put on Notice Too

Hours after Trump named Stephen Miller White House chief of staff, Garcia also issued a committee statement declaring, “Stephen Miller should lawyer up,” and pledging to keep investigating the immigration hard-liner, Oversight Democrats said.

In planning sessions detailed by Punchbowl News, Garcia mapped four opening tranches: Trump family corruption allegations, ICE and DHS conduct, corporate corruption, and Epstein. He flagged “Trump crypto schemes,” board seats and contracts involving relatives, and “pay-to-play” claims around former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski.

“We’re not starting from scratch here,” Garcia told Punchbowl. “There’s an enormous amount of work that has happened that is public, and there’s an enormous amount of work that’s happened that we’ve been quietly working on for many months.”

He said the majority brings contempt tools and court power behind House subpoenas. “Anyone who has been in bed with the Trumps” will have “no choice but to respond to our questions,” he added.

The White House has dismissed the planned investigations as political retribution. A White House source previously told Spectrum News that if Democrats “want to abuse their power,” they should remember the executive branch still controls federal enforcement tools.

Some Democratic advisers prefer corporate targets over a Trump-family blitz, CNBC noted, setting up an early fight over whether January’s Oversight calendar becomes a “retribution tour” or a costs-and-corruption agenda.

Garcia formally launched his chairmanship bid Thursday and faces no serious rival. Sen. Ron Wyden’s one-word post — “Subpoenas” — captured the same Democratic mood after the midterms, The Hill reported.

For Trump allies who spent 2025 and 2026 brushing off minority letters, Friday’s video is the clearest notice yet that the “lawyer up” slogan is about to become a subpoena docket.
