Fulton County Warns Voters About Fake Texts Claiming Their Polling Places Moved

Fulton County, Georgia, is warning voters to ignore text messages claiming their polling places have changed, saying the county did not send them.

“Some Fulton County voters have reported receiving text messages regarding polling place changes,” the county said in a post Tuesday, as The Western Journal reported. “These text messages were not sent by Fulton County.”

The county told voters to confirm their polling place on the Georgia My Voter Page or by calling 404-612-7020, Appen Media reported. Election Day voters in Georgia must vote at their assigned precinct.

The source of the false messages has not been identified, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Officials have not said how many voters received them. Fulton, which includes most of Atlanta, is Georgia’s most populous county.

Democratic gubernatorial nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms, a former Atlanta mayor, quickly blamed her opponents. “It’s about suppressing the vote, plain and simple,” she said. “Because what the other side realizes is that we are on the path to victory.”

Bottoms offered no evidence about who sent the texts. She faces Republican Rick Jackson in a governor’s race that an October AJC poll found neck and neck.

Georgia’s Senate race is also one of the most closely watched in the country, as Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff tries to hold off Republican Rep. Mike Collins, whom President Trump endorsed again on Tuesday.

Rescan Vote Tonight

The texts are not Fulton’s only Election Day issue. County election staff will ask the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections at 6:30 p.m. to approve recounting 1,069 early voting ballots after two scanners failed.

At the Mechanicsville Library on Oct. 21, a voter in a wheelchair rolled over a scanner’s power cord, and the machine would not work after a restart. The county plans to rescan all 361 ballots there.

At the Hugh C. Conley Recreation Center on Oct. 26, a scanner kept showing a paper jam that did not exist. Staff will try moving its memory cards to another scanner before rescanning those 708 ballots.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said the rescan will not delay any results, Atlanta News First reported. The county says the work will be done in public view.

Fulton is also one of six Georgia counties where the Justice Department sent election monitors Tuesday, along with Bibb, Chatham, Cobb, DeKalb and Gwinnett, WSB-TV reported.

About 650,000 Georgians had voted on Election Day by 1:30 p.m., on top of a record 2.8 million early votes. Raffensperger’s office expects more than 1 million votes to be cast Tuesday.

Polls close at 7 p.m., and anyone in line by then can still vote. Unofficial results will start coming in Tuesday evening, but they will not be final until counties certify them in the days ahead.
