Sen. Chris Murphy Hospitalized After Stroke at Son’s Hockey Game

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is in Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after suffering a stroke Saturday while watching his son play hockey, his office said Sunday.

“Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” chief of staff Allison Herwitt said in a statement, CBS News reported. She said he was transferred to Johns Hopkins “for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment.”

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt added.

No further details about his condition were released, ABC News reported.

Off the Midterm Trail

Murphy, 53, has spent recent weeks crisscrossing the country for Democratic candidates ahead of Tuesday’s midterms. He was scheduled to appear Sunday in New Hampshire with Senate candidate Chris Pappas, according to the state Democratic Party, ABC reported.

He has been one of the loudest Democratic voices against the administration’s Iran policy. Days ago, after a briefing, he called a plan to restart the war with Iran “insane,” Middle East Eye reported.

First elected to the Senate in 2012 after three House terms, Murphy won a third Senate term in 2024 and is often mentioned as a possible 2028 presidential contender.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said he and his wife, Annie, are keeping Murphy and his family in their prayers. “Just two days ago, I was with Senator Chris Murphy doing what he loves most: Encouraging Connecticut residents to make their voices heard and vote on Tuesday,” Lamont said. “I am sure that he will be walking across the state again very soon.”
