IRS Lifts 2027 Tax Brackets and Standard Deduction for Inflation

The Internal Revenue Service raised 2027 federal income tax brackets and key deductions for inflation, giving most filers slightly higher thresholds before higher rates apply.

The agency announced the annual adjustments for tax year 2027 on Nov. 5 in Revenue Procedure 2026-35, covering almost 70 provisions, the IRS said.

Returns for that year are generally filed in 2028.

The standard deduction rises to $33,200 for married couples filing jointly, up $1,000 from 2026, and to $16,600 for single filers and married people filing separately.

Heads of household will get a $24,925 standard deduction, up $775 from 2026, The Tax Adviser reported.

The top 37% rate still begins above $661,375 for single filers and $793,650 for joint filers.

For singles, the 10% bracket covers taxable income up to $12,800, 12% to $52,025, 22% to $109,125, 24% to $208,325, 32% to $264,550, and 35% to $661,375.

Joint filers get roughly double those cutoffs at the lower brackets, the Tax Foundation summarized.

The seven statutory rates from 10% to 37% are unchanged; only the dollar thresholds moved, Yahoo Finance reported.

Credits and Other Adjustments

The maximum Child Tax Credit rises to $2,300, up $100, and the refundable portion increases to $1,800, also up $100.

IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano said taxpayers “will continue to benefit from the Working Families Tax Cuts” as credits and deductions rise with the adjustment, according to the IRS.

The estate tax basic exclusion climbs to $15.48 million for 2027 deaths, up from $15 million, and the annual gift exclusion rises to $20,000 from $19,000.

Section 179 expensing increases to $2.64 million from $2.56 million.

The maximum Earned Income Tax Credit for taxpayers with three or more qualifying children rises to $8,496 from $8,231.

Health flexible spending arrangement salary-reduction limits rise to $3,500, up $100, with a $700 maximum carryover.

Inflation-adjusted tax parameters will rise about 3.2% on average for 2027, the Tax Foundation reported.

The release lands amid affordability pressure after consumer prices rose 3.7% year over year in September, CNBC reported.

The annual inflation patch does not rewrite tax law, but it prevents bracket creep from automatically pushing unchanged incomes into higher rates.

Personal exemptions remain at zero under permanent Working Families Tax Cuts rules.

Alternative minimum tax exemption amounts also rise, to $93,000 for unmarried filers and $144,700 for joint filers, with higher phaseout thresholds.

Payroll departments typically refresh withholding tables after the revenue procedure posts, so workers may see small paycheck changes in 2027 even if their pay is flat.

Households comparing 2026 and 2027 pay stubs should focus on taxable income relative to the new brackets, not just gross wages.

Filers will see the new figures on 2027 returns filed in early 2028, after another year of wage and price moves.
